DSR vs OLSR: Simulation Based Comparison of Ad Hoc Reactive and Proactive Algorithms under the Effect of New Routing Attacks

Mahmood Salehi, Hamed Samavati · 2012

Routing is one of the most significant challenges regarding mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Having no fixed infrastructure as well as frequent changes of network topology, as a result of nodes mobility, necessitates cooperation of all nodes in routing of packets. Lack of cooperation in routing can result in performance reduction and even network denial of service. Uncooperative behavior can be performed selfishly by refraining from participation in routing operations and, in a more advanced level, maliciously in the form of an attack against network to disorganize network. One of the most famous routing attacks in MANETs is Black Hole attack. In Black Hole, attacker node tends to advertise and diffuse fake routes, absorb network traffic towards itself and finally drop packets. In OLSR, as a proactive routing algorithm, and DSR, as a reactive routing algorithm, different routing attacks can be implemented. In this paper, behavior of OLSR and DSR will be compared under the effect of selfish nodes, Regular Black Hole, and New Black Hole attacks. Analysis of network parameters has been evaluated using NS-2 simulation tool. Simulation results represent that effect of mentioned attacks in both algorithms can be strongly devastating.
