The subject of this memoir (ANK in what follows) was born on 25 April 1903 in Tambov during a journey from the Crimea to his mother's home.He was the son of parents not formally married; ANK's mother Mariya Yakovlevna Kolmogorova was one of three sisters who have been described as independent women with lofty social ideas.Mariya Yakovlevna died in childbirth at Tambov and her son Andrei Nikolaevich was adopted and brought up in the village of Tunoshna (near to Yaroslavl on the river Volga) by her sister Vera Yakovlevna Kolmogorova.To her nephew Vera Yakovlevna gave all the love of a mother, and Andrei Nikolaevich Bull.London Math.
