Organizing a collection of development studies material
Peggy Creese · International Library Review · 1986
This article is intended as a guide for librarians or administrators setting up or administering special collections. I t is specifically concerned with the establishment of a development studies resource centre and may therefore be particularly relevant to many Third World collections. The case study approach, it is hoped, will also bear wider application, and help to illustrate general points to consider when housifig a specialized collection. Ultimately the establishment of any kind of collection must reflect and attempt to meet the needs of its users. This precept seems so obvious one might wonder whether it needs saying. Yet as will be seen when considering different classification systems, the precept is not always considered. The first rule of thumb then is to consider the purpose of the library.
