Message Filtering by Pattern Recognition
John M. Carroll · Journal of Information and Optimization Sciences · 1985
The abundance of machine-readable information now available from computer-based literature searches and electronic mail, bulletin boards, and news services is imposing a burdensome filtering task upon some users. Messages are often poorly indexed and sometimes not indexed at all. However, the task of filtering desired information from various input streams could be automated if computers could be programmed to categorize the messages as to their content. This kind of message filtering can be implemented by borrowing some pattern-recognitíon technology that has been used in other applications such as speech recognition[8].
