Webster's New World Dictionary lists 16 definitions, starting with “a small, circular band of metal” and ending with the mathematical definition used in set theory. The one definition that seems to be most applicable to local area networks states, “a number of people or things grouped into a circle.” The general description given in Section (2) of the IEEE 802.5 standard provides the following definition of a token ring
