Natural language processing in information retrieval
Tamas E. Doszkocs · Journal of the American Society for Information Science · 1986
The role and contributions of natural-language processing in information-retrieval and artificial-intelligence research is examined in the context of large operational information-retrieval systems and services. State-of-the-art information-retrieval systems are found to combine the functional capabilities of the conventional inverted file—Boolean logic—term adjacency approach, commonly employed by commercial search services, with statistical-combinatoric techniques pioneered in experimental information-retrieval research and formal natural-language processing methods and tools borrowed from artificial intelligence. © 1986 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
