To date, measurement of distance to objects has been implemented primarily by means of stereo systems using multiple cameras. However, such systems require extremely complicated parameter setting. In this context, the authors propose a single-camera distance measuring system. With this system, a rotating mirror is placed in front of the camera, which is equivalent to having multiple virtual cameras. Images captured by this system are then used to generate EPI. In EPI, object trajectories are represented by lines depending on the distance between the camera and object. Line segments are then extracted from EPI by means of Hough transform, and distance to objects is calculated from these segments. A prototype system with a rotating mirror was built, and experiments were performed to verify the proposed method. © 1999 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 30(11): 43–50, 1999
