Complete period analysis of voiced sounds

In this paper, a complete period analysis (CPA) technique for analyzing voiced sounds in Chinese Putonghua is proposed. The concept of CPA technique is to block the voiced speech signal according to its period; that is, the length of each analysis frame is typically equal to one pitch period. The main advantages of CPA method are: (1) The spectrum variability due to analysis, especially when short time Fourier transform (STFT) is used, can be eliminated; (2) computation time can be saved considerably; and (3) accurate phase information can be obtained. To implement CPA, a special data acquisition system consisting of a real-time pitch extractor and a high-speed digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) has been developed, in which the sampling rate is adaptively adjusted according to the pitch period of the voiced sound signal to be sampled so that the number of points in each frame remains constant, and thus a fixed size discrete Fourier transform (DFT) can be applied. In this study, some experimental results are given, which show that CPA is especially suitable for Chinese Putonghua.
