The following paper is intended to be one of the series suggested some years ago by Mr. Waine for the purpose not only of correlating the experience and knowledge of older surveyors, but also as likely to prove instructive to students and junior members of the Institution. Accordingly I make no apologies for parts of the paper which may seem elementary.
