Virtual reality and the vestibular apparatus

The defining feature of a virtual reality system is the sensation of presence. There are two main sensory systems that perceive motion: the visual and the vestibular. Their characteristics are described in the paper. Issues discussed include: visual stabilization; adaptation of vestibular reflexes; simulator sickness and sickness in virtual environments; and vestibular adaptation.
