We propose a new source localization algorithm for the development of a touch interface using surface-mounted sensors. This algorithm allows one to convert a hard surface into a touch pad. The proposed algorithm is based on triangulation using phase transit time-differences-of-arrival (TDOA) between the received signals from the sensors. In this inter-disciplinary research, we analyze the wave propagation of flexural vibration due to an impact on a surface which in turn allows one to gain insights to the frequency spectrum diversity of vibration signals and background noise. We then show how the Kullback-Leibler discrimination information can be used to determine the phase transit time of the vibration signal. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with existing TDOA approaches on real surfaces.
