Media transports and distributed multimedia flows

Mark Baugher · 1992

Abstracti The flow requirements of distributed multimedia are discussed, and some necessary transport features are proposed in this paper. The prospects for using existing networks and transport software for distributed multimedia applications are considered: Bandwidth reservation functions are needed in the physical network; media-specific quality of service, unreliable but ordered simplex channels, and performance-related changes are needed in transport system soflware.New distributed systems services may also be required by multimedia servers and clients. OverviewMultimedia computing is the processing of various media such as video, waveform audio, musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) streams, animation, graphics and text.Media processing includes the capture, authoring (editing), and playback of media streams as well as what we today call da[a processing.
