To support mobile endpoints in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks, location management schemes have been proposed in which an incoming call to a mobile is first routed to its home switch and then rerouted to the mobile's current location. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for optimizing the route of a connection that becomes suboptimal due to such location-based reroutes in mobile ATM networks based on the PNNI (Private Network-to-Network Interface) standard. This algorithm uses the hierarchical route information of the connection and the summarized topology and loading information of the network to determine a "crossover r&e" such that adjusting the connection from that crossover node results in an optimally routed connection. This route optimization procedure can be executed during mobile connection setup resulting in a one-phase mobile location and connection setup scheme. We also demonstrate how this route optimization procedure can be executed after a connection is set up to a mobile as a secondphase of a two-phase mobile location and connection setup scheme.A comparative performance analysis of the one-and two-phase connection setup schemes is presented.Measures of comparison are call setup delay and the amount of network resources allocated to a connection. The one-phase scheme incurs higher call setup delays, but results in an optimal route during connection setup. On the other hand, the two-phase scheme incurs lower call setup delays, but results in connections with suboptimal routes, prior to the execution of the route optimization phase. -.
