Software Systems Requirements

Richard Conn · Journal on Educational Resources in Computing · 2002

This module describes course SWE 2623 on software systems requirements given at the School of Computing and Software Engineering Southern Polytechnic State University. The process of extracting, deriving, and validating software requirements from a customer are explored, including levels of user/customer involvement, effective means of documenting requirements, the dynamics of interviewing, and the development of requirements specifications interactively (via methods such as the Evolutionary Spiral Model, now required for all contractors by DoD Directive 5000.1). A large part of the course is devoted to problem domain modeling using current analysis methods and supporting tools, including rapid prototyping aids and UML. Requirements engineering methodologies, such as Consortium Requirements Engineering and Requirements-Based Testing, are examined. Formal methods employing languages such as Z and SPARK are discussed.
