Wideband direction of arrival estimation based on multiple virtual extension arrays

Wideband direction of arrivals (DOAs) estimation is a important research direction in array signal processing field. In the real application of DOAs estimation, signals are always corrupted by noise, and in some cases the number of source signals is larger than that of sensors, therefore sources cannot be correctly resolved by using some conventional algorithms. In this paper, a wideband DOAs method combining spatial resampling and fourth-order cumulants is presented - Multiple Virtual Extension Array (MVEA). MVEA can find the direction of wideband sources correctly in the case where the number of sources is larger than that of sensor, and by utilizing virtual extension both spatial resampling and fourth-order cumulants, MVEA obtains better spatial resolution than method only based on spatial resampling virtual extension(SRVE). MVEA can also suppress Gaussian noise more effectively than SRVE by applying fourth-order cumulants, therefore MVEA obtains higher DOAs estimation precision than SRVE.
