Automatic Measurement of Pedestrian Flow Characteristics within Buildings

S. S. Mudaly · Architectural Science Review · 1980

The optimisation of the design of pedestrian circulation areas entails a knowledge of the maximum concentration of pedestrians in corridors and concourses, and pedestrian capacities at entrances. The effect of conflict between opposing flow streams at intersections, average flow rates and mean pedestrian densities are also of interest. This paper describes a computer-based data acquisition system, employing infra-red techniques to monitor pedestrian movement in buildings. To demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the instrumentation in gathering and processing pedestrian traffic flow information, automatically, the results of field studies within a multi-purpose University building are presented.
