The analysis of the motion of an object from continuous images is an important and difficult problem which has been the focus of many research efforts. This paper proposes the “active tubes” model for motion analysis of elastic bodies. The proposed model can be viewed as the superposition along the time axis of the Snakes model proposed by Kass and colleagues. As in the Snakes model, an object is extracted from spatiotemporal images by an energy minimization method. Originally, the active tubes method employed a greedy algorithm for convergence. However, since that algorithm was easily affected by noise, a new method, the randomized greedy algorithm has also been proposed. This algorithm is robust to noise and is as fast as the earlier one. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc. Syst Comp Jpn, 28(9): 67–76, 1997
