SECOND ORDER HOMOPHONIC CIPHERS
Carl Hammer · Cryptologia · 1988
In this paper we review second order homophonic ciphers and their relevance to the three ciphers attributed to Thomas J. Beale. We provide a few examples of such ciphers, to demonstrate how they are encoded and how they can be solved, provided the key is known. Then we turn to the Beale Ciphers and examine the possibility that B2 permits another solution than the well known “I have deposited in the County of Bedford…”. We then address the likelihood of anagramming as a solution methodology, and look at the problems of redundancy and complexity, which constrain the search for an anagrammed, feasible solution to the two allegedly unbroken ciphers, Bl and B3.
