Temporal microstructural rules for periodicity of random-amplitude sequences

Irwin W. Pollack · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1983

We examine microstructural rules for the emergence of periodicity formed by temporal subpatterns within repeated random-amplitude sequences. The specific subpatterns were weighted either by successive replication, e.g., AAABAAAB … or by differential amplitude weighting, e.g., AAbAAb …, where b is a reduced version of B. For short-duration subpatterns, the dominant periodicity is that of the entire repeated sequence. For long-duration subpatterns, the dominant periodicity is that of the individual subpatterns, depending upon the relative amplitude weighting and the number of replications.
