Three prevalent properties of disordered systems and their common cause

Abstract There are three properties very frequently observed in strongly disordered systems, an ac conductivity proportional to the frequency, resistance noise with a power spectrum inversely proportional to the frequency and a glassy relaxation logarithmic in time. It is proposed that a common cause produces these phenomena, namely transition rates between states being exponential functions of a random variable. It is shown how all three properties can be obtained from this exponential dependence. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
