Can A Priori Probabilities Help in Character Recognition?

A. Edwards, Robert Chambers · Journal of the ACM · 1964

Tests indicate that use of certain Crypta.nalysistechniques show promise as a method to improve character recognition by computer. All languages exhibit certain peculiar characteristics such as letter combinations, frequency of occurrence of letters and initial and terminal letters of words. These a t t r i b u t e s can therefore be used to improve character recognition.T e s t s run on English text indicate that the use of statistics (m the occurrence of twoletter combinations can appreciably improve character recognition in the presence of noise in the input channel. This fact leads one to believe t h a t using this and other techniques could dramatically improve the ability of character recognition methods to filter out noisy input and improve accuracy.
