Stuck? Don't Give Up! Subgoal-Generation Strategies in Problem Solving

Robert J. Jensen · Mathematics Teacher Learning and Teaching PK-12 · 1987

Why do students have such difficulty with problems that require a multi-step approach to a solution? Clearly, some of the difficulty lies in the increased likelihood of computational errors creeping into the solution as the actual number of operations performed increases, but more often the real difficulty is not computational errors but the logic of the overall solution plan.
