A Self-Adjusting Multi-granularity Locking protocol for Object-Oriented Databases

Deepa Saha, J.M. Morrissey · 2009

Object-Oriented Databases (OODBs) can provide persistence for object-oriented applications without using an object-relational mapping layer. In this work, we propose a novel Self-Adjusting-granularity Locking protocol (SAML), for OODBs which has less overhead and provides better concurrency compared to some existing protocols. There is another adaptive multi-granularity protocol, AMGL, which provides the same degree of concurrency as SAML. However, our protocol significantly reduces the number of locks. Experimental results show that SAML performs best when the workload in the system is high and transactions are long-lived.
