This paper proposes a method of converting a motion picture obtained from a uniform linear motion camera to a plane spatiotemporal image using a hyperbolic slit on the picture plane. A method of acquiring three-dimensional (3D) information of the object by using the created plane spatiotemporal image is proposed. When the optical axis of a uniform linear motion camera is in the same direction as that of the camera motion and sampling is carried out by a hyperbolic slit in the plane spatiotemporal image, the linearity of the linear edge of the object is conserved. In addition, the information on the linear edge position in the 3D space can be obtained from the parameters of the line after the conversion. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of this method. Optimization of the position and shape of the hyperbolic slit are discussed. Using this proposed method, 3D shapes of objects such as buildings can be estimated from moving pictures of urban scenery. This method can be used in creating 3D digital maps and modeling urban space. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 31(6): 99–107, 2000
