Categorizing musical pieces by their correlation coeffiecients
Ilhan M. Izmirli · Journal of Interdisciplinary Mathematics · 2011
In this paper our goal is to propose an empirical rule that uses the correlation between the notes that make up a musical piece to categorize that piece. Intuitively speaking, this rule must conform to the expectation that in melodies that sound detached and seemingly incoherent and disjointed (such as some in twentieth century music), there would be a weak correlation between the notes, whereas in more classical pieces, where rules of harmony are loyally followed, there would be a strong one.
