A clustering-based method of simulating self-luminous particle system in real-time is presented in this paper. Particle system is widely used in computer graphics simulation for fuzzy phenomena. However, some kinds of fuzzy phenomena simulated by particle system are self-luminous, such as fireworks and explosions. Prior work ignore the illumination of self-luminous particle system, or simply set a light in the particle system to roughly simulate the lighting. This paper presents a method of simulating self-luminous particle system in real-time based on clustering. In our method, every particle is considered as a point light. Then we decrease the total lights number by dividing the lights to some clusters, and merge the lights in the same cluster to a single point light. In rendering stage, tile-based deferred rendering is used to calculate the lights illumination. The result shows that this approach can be useful for self-luminous particle system simulation.
