The controller area network (CAN) protocol is widely used for in-vehicle network (IVN) systems because of its simple implementation, resistance to electromagnetic interference, design flexibility, and predictable bounded delay. Many automotive companies also use the CAN for chassis network systems. However, the increasing number of electronic control units (ECUs) dictated by the need for more intelligent and fuel-efficient functions require an IVN system with more transmission capacity and less network delays. Automotive companies have tried several approaches such as segmentation of CAN systems or development of time-triggered protocols. This paper presents a practical method of increasing the transmission capacity and reducing the network delay with Kalman prediction method to forecast the traffic on each channel in CAN systems.
