Readers of the journal Leonardo (www.leonardo.info) will be familiar with the principle behind this collection of 21 essays, which continues the journal's 35-year history of bringing together people and ideas from art, science, and technology. However, for those readers who may expect topics in computing aesthetics to centre primarily on interfaces, most of the articles in this volume will be surprising. As Paul A. Fishwick says in his introductory chapter, one of the goals of Leonardo is to help ensure that the notion of aesthetics in computing encompasses the complete range of computing areas. Some of these areas have a visual component, but aesthetic interest can extend beyond the visual. Fishwick provides examples from his own mathematical modelling research at the University of Florida.
