Abstract Scaling algorithms, which are used to resize images displayed on e.g. LCD monitors, may introduce artifacts, and affect the overall quality of the displayed image. By means of three subjective assessments, we designed a tool to benchmark the performance of these scaling algorithms in terms of image quality preservation. In particular, we selected critical image material, classified the artifacts that may occur as a consequence of scaling and combined a preference analysis with an artifacts analysis. As a result, we present a relation between the overall image quality as judged by end‐users and the importance of the various artifacts.
