SECTION 1: MULTILINGUAL DATABASES: An International Project in Multilingual Lexicography

John M. Sinclair · International Journal of Lexicography · 1996

The hypothesis that there is likely to be a relationship between the textual environment of a word in one language, and the word used to translate it (its ‘translation equivalent’) in another was investigated across a range of European languages. The relevant co-textual features: words, phrases and structural patterns were found to be frequent enough and clear enough to suggest (i) that automation of important parts of the translation process was possible (ii) that a multilingual database/dictionary could be created as a resource for more dependable human translation.
