Equivalent capacity for on/off sources in ATM

A formula is presented for the ‘equivalent capacity’ required to support a given cell loss probability in an ATM buffer fed by a single on/off source. This formula can be applied as a component in connection admission control and bandwidth management algorithms in ATM telecommunications networks.
