Abstract E. Burton Swanson summarizes and explains his typology of software maintenance (corrective, adaptive, and perfective), and describes his research on maintenance. His two major projects have been the large DPMA study done in 1977 with Bennet P. Lientz, and the in‐depth intensive study of twelve sites done a bit over a decade later with Cynthia M. Beath. Professor Swanson includes some of his views of the current situation and future in software maintenance.
