Optical disk alternatives to tape archives
Tamia Taylor · 2003
Broadcasters have been talking about what to do with their VTR archives for as long as video tape has been in existence - and that's nearly 50 years. We look at some of the reasons why many content owners, whilst recognizing the contribution which the development of the VTR has made to programme production, have had increasing concerns about the economics and long term viability of storing their highly valued content on what is an intrinsically fragile media often with alarmingly short 'format lives'. A case is made for using some of the new generation (and near future generation) optical disk technologies which are becoming available as an alternative to video or data tape. (7 pages)
