On spontaneous increase of magnetic moments
H. Herbert Howe · Transactions American Geophysical Union · 1943
It has long been considered axiomatic that magnets gradually lose strength, and the only question has been how to make the loss as slow as possible. Since it requires the expenditure of energy to produce a magnet, it would appear that the only possible spontaneous change would be for the magnetic moment to decrease. The discussions of magnets in standard reference works appear to fall into two classes: (a) Those which say that the moment slowly decreases; (b) those which assume that everyone knows this and merely discuss methods of making the decrease as slow as possible.
