Digital phase detection for DVD using an adaptive dual-arm correlator

Lou Supino · Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE · 1998

Correlation techniques are used widely in communications, sonar, radar, medical and other signal processing systems. The most desirable property of correlation as a Digital Phase Detector (DPD) is the ability to measure the time delay between two similar signals. This paper proposes the use of correlation techniques to generate DPD signals which can be used in place of conventional phase detectors and filters. The proposed correlator generates two quadrature position error signals and a plus or minus 1/2 track position error signal. The correlator length is adaptively adjusted to provide the appropriate signal bandwidth.
