A study of factors influencing the productivity of programming teams
Raghava G. Gowda, Stanley L. Saxton · Proceedings of the 17th conference on ACM Annual Computer Science Conference · 1989
The objective of this research is to identify factors which influence the performance of programming teams. It is an extension of a larger research effort (Gowda, 1988) to probe the influence of individual and group characteristics on programmer productivity. The Gowda work was carried out in a large data processing organization from 1984 to 1988. The results revealed that production emphasis (pressure for productive output) by project leaders adversely affects performance. The other factors such as education, programming experience, group cohesiveness were positively correlated with productivity. This study extends Gowda's research through direct observation of programming team work.
