Bringing IT out of the shadows

Richard F. Walters · Network Security · 2013

In late 2012, ReRez Research undertook a global survey of 3,236 IT managers across 29 countries on behalf of Symantec to discover the extent of ‘shadow IT’. 1 Some 83% of enterprise IT managers reported that employees had procured cloud-based applications without the involvement of their IT departments. In mid-sized organisations, 70% of the IT managers surveyed had discovered instances of cloud-based services being used without prior consultation with the IT department. So-called ‘rogue clouds’ now affect a large number of enterprises. And with employees using their own devices, there's now a large portion of an organisation's IT estate that is beyond its control. Richard Walters of SaaSID examines how CISOs can enable the use of software as a service applications and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programmes to combat shadow IT, without losing visibility or governance of corporate data.
