Evaluating bit error rate test confidence level for systems with biterror dependence

Dependence between bit errors in a digital communication system can impact the confidence level of a bit error rate (BER) test significantly when compared to the confidence level calculated by assuming independent bit errors. In the case of dependent bit errors, both the buyer and seller are well served by an accurate calculation of the BER test confidence, including the effects of dependence, which might avoid either unnecessary test time or undesired risk of passing a system which does not meet the specified BER. This paper describes a technique which enables accurate confidence calculations for systems with complex dependence mechanisms.
