Securing the point of sale

Retailers have been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the past year. In late 2013, US retailer Target was the subject of a point of sale (POS) malware hack at its stores affecting as many as 40 million customers who saw their credit and debit cards potentially compromised – along with 70 million customer account details. More recently, US DIY behemoth Home Depot was hit by what it described as ‘unique, custom-built malware' in a cyber-attack estimated to have put payment card information at risk for approximately 56 million customers. The malware is believed to have been present between April and September 2014.
