Multiresolution analysis of vertex curves and watershed boundaries

John M. Gauch, Stephen M. Pizer · Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE · 1992

This paper presents two methods to identify and analyze geometric structures in grey-scale images: vertex curves and watershed boundaries. Both of these geometric representations capture interesting properties of ridges and valleys in an image and are related to the intensity axis of symmetry (IAS). The multiresolution behavior of these image shape descriptions can be used to impose a scale-based hierarchy on ridges and valleys in the image. This hierarchy can be utilized in top-down or bottom-up analysis of image structure. Robust methods to calculate these geometric representations are also described.
