Perceptual study on nasality using synthetic sounds

The acoustic correlates of nasality have been investigated from a perceptual point of view. An active model for specifying nasality obtained on the basis of perceptual experiments showed quite reasonable results for nasal murmurs but not necessarily for nasalized vowels [S. Takeuchi et al., preprints of the SCS-74, Vol. 3, pp. 141–148]. For improving the model, more detailed experiments were performed with speech sounds synthesized by adding a pole-zero pair or a pole only to the non-nasalized vowel spectra. By taking the contributions of the frequency locations of such a pole-zero pair or pole to the perception of nasality into account, the nasalized vowels were fairly well specified by our model.
