Applications of the kohonen algorithm in vector quantization

Abstract The paper deals with the exploitation of the codebook‐ordering property of the Kohonen algorithm in vector quantization (VQ). First, the substantial equivalence between the Kohonen algorithm and the generalized‐Lloyd algorithm in terms of encoding performance for memo‐ryless VQ is established. Then, algorithms based on the use of Kohonen ordered codebooks are proposed to solve different problems in VQ such as rate reduction, progressive transmission, and channel‐error protection.
