UCRL-11222FORTRAN program SUMX is a data-summarizing program.SUMX constructs' displays, in the form of lists, histograms, graphs, etc., from information extracted from sets of records on an input tape.Control cards specify the sets of records, the information to be extracted from each set, and finally, what sort of display is to be made from the information .• ,, -1-UCRL-11222 UCRL-11222The subroutine that reads the •summary tape (called Tape), the subroutines that make the histograms, etc. (called BLOCs), and the subroutine that selects ti.1e subsets of people in the survey (called Select) all work under command of control cards which are read by the SUM.X program at execution time.(Since SUM.X was originally written for high-energy physicists, who deal with a set of physical events rather than with a set of people, the term event, lnstead of the term person, has been used throughout much of this report.Perhaps the term item would have been more acceptable to a wider class of users. We could then think of ann-word record on our summary tape as the n properties (or quantities or variables) that d.escribe our item.)The write -up of SUMX has been divided into two sections: Section I describes the use of the more general (List L) subroutines of the existing SUMX program.Section I is written for people who merely wish to use various combinations of the existing program, Section II gives the requirements for writing additional subroutines for SUMX.These requirements have been kept minimal, since ease of adding (or deleting) subroutines is one of the principal aims of SU MX.Section II also gives a description of the executive and tape-handling programs.Section II is written for people with some knowledge of programming.A partial compendium of more special purpose (ListS) subroutines has been included in Appendix B.'
