Synthetic-Sentence Identification and the Receiver Operating Characteristic

Charles Speaks, James Jerger · Journal of Speech and Hearing Research · 1967

Two experiments were undertaken to explore the applicability of a statistical-decision model to performance in a sentence identification task. Five normal-hearing observers were tested under a variety of structured criteria. Results suggest that, in this listening task, observers generate ROC curves consistent with the model and that one can derive a measure of performance that is independent of the observer’s criterion.
