John Cage and Richard Kostelanetz: A Conversation About Radio
Richard Kostelanetz · The Musical Quarterly · 1986
HAVING already done distinguished work in music, in theater, in poetry and in visual art, John Cage recently discovered, or rediscovered, a new medium to explore in radio. Working with Klaus Sch6ning, a staff producer of Horspiel (literally, ear-play) for Westdeutscher Rundfunk, he has produced a series of Horspiele, including Roaratorio (1979), Ein Alphabet (1982), Muoyce (1973), and HMCIEX (1984). Critically speaking, these horspiels represent an intermedium between the domains of poetry and music, drawing upon both, without falling completely into either. For Roaratorio, subtitled An Irish Circus on Finnegans Wake, Cage won the coveted Karl-Sczuka-Prize of German radio. The citation read
