Masking Noise and Jitter-Detection Thresholds
Irwin W. Pollack · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1969
Is the detection of temporal irregularity, or auditory jitter, dependent upon the availability of specific spectral frequency regions? An attempt was made to answer this question by obtaining jitter-detection thresholds in the presence of band-limited noise. Maximum effect is obtained by masking noise at intermediate spectral frequencies, in the region of 1 kHz, for a wide range of auditory pulse frequencies. This frequency region was also implicated by Rosenberg in the discrimination of the pitch of jittered pulse trains. What is this result trying to tell us?
