Programmatic utilities of sensor data

Utilizing sensor data directly by Ubicomp applications requires simple programmatic abstractions such as sensor API's or service-oriented representations of sensors. However, there are other powerful utilities such as phenomena clouds, complex events, continuous queries, contexts, activities, situations, and goals, all needy of equally powerful programmatic abstractions. Without empowering and supporting programmers and developers to use these various utilities, the full potential of sensor deployments will not be realized. In this keynote speech, I will present several programmatic abstractions that support programmers and developers of future Ubicomp systems, and that promotes the transfer of specialized research (as it matures) into the realm of languages, tools, run time environments and middleware. I will present our ongoing research work in this area and discuss several challenges that require more attention and creativity by this research community.
