A FACTORIAL INVESTIGATION OF SPEECH SOUND PFRCEPTION

Göte Hanson · Scandinavian Journal of Psychology · 1963

The aim has been to find the dimensionality in speech sound perception for Swedish vowels using a multidimensional scaling technique. The vowels can be characterized physically by certain fixed energy distribution regions, which constitute the distinctive features in the speech code. The results show that a 4‐dimensional physical stimulus description corresponds to a 2‐dimensional auditive description for the vowels. The two factors which are obtained by means of auditive experience of dissimilarity between speech sounds correspond to the second and first formants respectively in the physical description.
