Statistical Comparison of Water Production Functions Using Regression Analysis

Michael H. Ames, Ted W. Sammis · Applied Engineering in Agriculture · 1990

Regression analysis is a versatile and powerful statistical tool for describing relations among variables. An example is the development of water production functions that relate water applied or evapotranspiration to crop yield. The widespread use of regression is enhanced by availability of regression software packages on most computers. However, while most researchers are now familiar with the output from such programs and its interpretation, few are familiar with the basic regression theory necessary to perform analyses not specifically included in the programs command statements. This article describes how statistical tests of hypothesis are performed in regression, with an example showing how standard software can be used to test the equality of water production functions.
