A Picture Database - Conservation Needs and Electronic Access to the Fridtjof Nansen Picture Archive

Svanhild Aabø · IFLA Journal · 1992

The author describes a project undertaken at the University of Oslo Library which aimed to improve conservation of image collections, and to facilitate access to the collection. The Mansen photographs are made available by computer, whilst the originals are preserved for future generations. Eight thousand images were conserved and 3500 unique images were identified, classified, catalogued and digitalized. For the text input, a HyperCard application was used, and for retrieval the search programme HyperKRS has been applied. HyperIndex was used for indexing. The result is a user-friendly interface based on a combination of text and pictures.
